Doing the Right Thing with Palm Done Right

From the time this company began, we have selected simple, natural ingredients, and have obtained them from the most ethical, sustainable sources we can find. We try to source locally when possible, and also value organic and vegan ingredients. We continue to seek the best ingredients from principled partners and are always on the lookout. As our founder Kelly says, “Carefully selected ingredients were actually the basis of the creation of this company, and that standard continues to be at the heart of what we do.” There has never been any question that our soap would use sustainable palm oil, but even sustainably certified sources can come into question.
Why, what's up with palm oil?
While palm oil is an inherently sustainable, nutrient-dense oil, the way in which most palm oil is being produced has wreaked havoc on habitats, leading to the demise of critically-endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger, the Asian rhinoceros and the Sumatran Orangutan.1
Unethical practices in the production of palm oil continue to be a major cause of deforestation and the destruction of animal habitats, displacement of indigenous communities, and climate change that goes along with it. This permanent removal of trees causes soil erosion, flooding, and increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. We continue to be mindful and keep a close eye on our sources to ensure we stay on the right track. That's why Kelly sought to become a Palm Done Right brand partner using RSPO certified palm oil.
Rainforest deforestation is a major problem with most sources of palm oil, and it isn't an easy problem to solve. The huge demand for palm oil has led to devastating consequences as producers ignored the cultural, ecological, and social impacts in favor of the almighty dollar. Palm oil is ubiquitous. You may not even realize all the products around your house that contain palm oil – from your kitchen pantry, to your bathroom cabinets, to your laundry room.
